Application Advice

We want to make sure that you can make the best first impression possible at every stage of your application process. This page is designed to help you understand what we’re looking for and how to prepare for each step.

Online Tests

Before you start

You can complete both the numerical reasoning test as well as a verbal reasoning test online, at a time of your choosing. You’ll have five days to complete these tests, with the deadline detailed in the test invitation we send you by email.

  • You can choose where and when to take the tests so ensure you plan ahead, and don’t leave it to the last minute
  • Choose a time and place where you’ll be able to focus
  • Check your internet connection before you start

During the tests

  • Take time to read the test instructions thoroughly
  • Make sure you answer all the questions you can answer confidently
  • Make educated guesses: if you can eliminate two answers you should guess

Numerical Reasoning Test (NRT)

  • Don’t panic – maths is generally at GCSE level
  • Take practice tests – there is a link to a practice test in your invite email
  • Practise key mathematical operations such as finding a percentage
  • Revise any problem areas using GCSE revision books or BBC Bitesize revision

Verbal Reasoning Test (VRT)

  • Take practice tests to become familiar with the types of question asked – there is a link to a practice test in your invite email
  • Your university careers service or public library will have books you can use to improve your understanding of the tests and question types
  • Read the questions carefully as the wording used is important
